The world hath taken to baring-off restless souls
who scribble patriotism in the witching hours,
while others snore beneath quilts of ignorance.
They fear you—
for silver coins may cross oceans
and jingle in the treasury of your own soil,
while they, poor caretakers of sunlight,
awake only when the rooster grows tired of crowing.
They can tax thy earnings,
clip thy wings,
stamp thy forehead with bureaucratic seal…
yet how shall they levy duties
upon a mind that gallops faster than paperwork?
How shall they build a customs gate
on imagination that leaks like moonlight
through prison bars?
So they gather
in air-conditioned chambers,
where tea grows cold faster
than their ideas grow warm,
devising schemes to save the stale bread
of writers whose words smell like last week’s biscuits.
But thou—
wild quill of the midnight kingdom—
need only dip thy ink in courage.
For no empire, digital or earthly,
hath yet invented the tax
for thought, fire, and genius un-audited.
